About
Released in 1978, Sweat, Smoke & Satin finds Reggie Nightingale pushing his trademark soul-funk sound into heavier, more cinematic territory. The grooves remain deep and danceable, but the guitars hit harder, the drums land bigger, and the arrangements stretch wider with strings, organ, brass, and late-night atmosphere. It is still unmistakably Reggie—seductive, theatrical, and loaded with innuendo—but now the swagger carries more heat, more tension, and a little more danger. Where A Gentleman’s Guide to Misbehaving reveled in charm and mischief, Sweat, Smoke & Satin lets some of the consequences into the room. Desire turns obsessive, secret affairs become harder to contain, and the jokes occasionally give way to something more vulnerable without ever losing the groove. The result is a tougher, smokier record: soul-funk with rock-and-roll muscle, cinematic drama, and enough satin-covered trouble to keep the lights low until morning.
